• If you are a language assistant starting work in September 2015, here is an update:
o First of all, we encourage you to take advantage of the summer to find a place to live in your new community (if you haven’t yet done so, or if your accommodations have not already been arranged for you). On-line advertising, such as craigslist and Kijiji, are great tools to use. Your supervisor at the school board and/or the principal at the school where you will be working can also help you to some extent. You can also use the Odyssey Facebook page to find people who live or have lived in the area that you will be moving to, and ask them for their recommendations. A strategy used by many is to find a temporary place for the first few days (e.g., hostel, living with a friend, renting a room in a private home), and then, once you’re there, you should be able to find something to your liking.
o The pan-Canadian training session for first-time participants will take place in Quebec City from September 2 to 4 this year. Your host coordinator has either sent or will be sending you more information about this training session. You’ll get the chance to meet your coordinator and other language assistants working in your province or territory, find out more about your role, and leave with plenty of ideas and activities! Come with an open mind, a great attitude, a huge smile, and a big appetite! It will be busy, but it will be fun! We look forward to seeing you there!
• If you are interested in becoming a language assistant but have not yet applied, please note that the application portal is currently open, and you’re welcome to send your application to your coordinator. Your coordinator might contact you for an interview if positions become available throughout the summer.
We invite you to follow us on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram for all the latest updates, and we’re always available there to answer your questions! You can also use the contact form below to reach us by e-mail!
